From that ambitious idea, Makeena was born.
In Swahili, Makeena means happiness. In Hawaiian, the word translates to abundance. In English, Makeena is defined as empowerment. Because Makeena’s mission is to make healthy and sustainable products and foods more accessible to everyone, and to help foster a world of kindness and giving.

Chief Executive Officer, Co-founder, & Board Chair
Karen is passionate about being an entrepreneur and making the world a better place. She firmly believes that building a technology company in the natural products space will encourage people to shop healthier because Makeena will make it easy for them to make smarter choices. Karen became an entrepreneur in the early 1990s when she moved to Boulder, Colorado, and built and operated two interactive touchscreen kiosk companies, one for the real estate industry and one for the natural products industry. Since then, Karen has been general counsel for a number of emerging growth and publicly-held software and data analytics companies. Karen earned her degree in accounting and business from Indiana University and a CPA and law degree from the University of Illinois. She also attended Oxford University, focusing on international business transactions, and taught Principles of Business for Entrepreneurs in the Cross Campus Entrepreneurship Certificate Program at the University of Colorado.
David believes that excellence, when pursued in technology, produces systems that lay the foundation for business success and deliver outstanding value for customers. With over 20 years of experience in software and systems development, David expertly guides projects from inception to deployment and then works with teams to enable continuous sustainable enhancement. He has a tremendous breadth of hands-on know how to draw against, from commercial ERP software to high-availability, high-profile backends for world famous media companies to lean MVPs for hot startups. David earned his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Vice President, Business Development
Rick is passionate about building lasting partnerships and has done so across a variety of roles and industries. Having spent the majority of his career in technology and professional sports, he’s had the opportunity to build strong relationships with marquee brands through his time in the NBA, NHL, and professional cycling, as well as 14 years working with several Fortune 500 technology companies. His appreciation for natural foods began in 2012, while training for 3 long distance cycling events. After being introduced to several natural sports nutrition options, he was forever devoted to optimizing performance with those healthier better for you products. At Makeena, Rick is focused on establishing and growing exceptional partnerships with both traditional and emerging natural products brands. Rick graduated from the University of Colorado with his degree in Communications and from the Thunderbird School of Global Management with a MBA in International Business.
Director, Partner Delight
Allison is a natural networker and loves building relationships with people. She has worked with CPG brands for over 10 years, providing creative consumer engagement strategies that allow companies to get the most out of their marketing dollars. Her role as Director of Partner Delight at Makeena allows for brand partners to leverage her creativity to optimize their presence on the app and to consumers. Allison coordinates copy and images for contracted social posts and newsletters, as well as reviews partner data on Makeena’s proprietary dashboard to make Makeena’s partners are connecting with consumers in unique and meaningful ways. Allison earned her degree in Communications from the University of Arizona.
